Burrito Boys

Nate Tyler, Jake Kelley, Micky Clarke, Dylan Graves and Warren Smith walk into a few super fun Californian beachbreaks with a fresh batch of Haydenshapes boards. The punchline? “Burrito Boys,” a summery, new short film of their road-trippy sessions by filmmaker Matt Payne. With Nate on a Loot FF and White Noiz PE, Jake on a Hypto Krypto PE, Micky on a Cohort I FF, Dylan on a custom Weird Series Prototype and Warren on an Untitled V2 FF—you get a sense of how well this batch of boards really go…and how many breakfast burritos is required to produce such phenomenal surfing. We caught up with the dashing, young Matt Payne and got a little backstory to this new Haydenshapes vid that can’t help but make you want to drop everything and go surf now.

Haydenshapes: Tell me about filming Burrito Boys…the film has a really fun vibe.
Matt Payne: Burrito Boys was just a working title that kind of stuck. We kept road-tripping up to Ventura in spring, chasing (shoulda been here yesterday) swell and getting sort of fun, relatable sessions in. We always followed it up with breakfast burritos with the boys afterwards. Nothing too serious to really unpack. I always loved spring/summer session-based clips without too high of a ceiling, so hopefully this project turns into a series with the team testing out different boards and having a good time.
Awesome. And, so Ventura, and where else did you shoot?
Ventura, Oxnard and Oceanside! Relatable California peaks, filmed within a modest week of combo swell.
All the boys seemed like they were on different Haydenshapes models...any story with that?
It was kind of a gathering of all the regional US based team (Dylan Graves, Jake Kelley, Nate Tyler, Micky Clarke, Warren Smith) They were getting new boards shipped in all at once and testing them out in different conditions and the usual suspects worked really well (Cohort, Hypto, Untitled, etc)!
Out of the bunch, who's the funnest to shoot or most unpredictable…?
Jake Kelley has a deep bag of tricks! I loved how spring loaded he is. Also, Dylan Graves always looks like he’s having the most fun. Nate Tyler and Micky Clarke are super smooth as well, and Warren Smith had a great cameo.
What was the most surprising thing that happened while shooting these guys?
Trying to follow a hyped swell is always tough. We were kind of chasing it and realized we had to make the best out of what we had in front of us. Which, were really good breakfast burritos and better-than-we-thought sandbars [laughs]. Also, Nate Tyler staying in his van everywhere we went was cool. Feral Sprinter Dad-goals.
How many burritos would you say were actually consumed in the making of?
Too many to count. But worth every penny.
Any backstory on the music?
I was really feeling this 80s post punk band called The Feelies. Sounds kinda percussive and lower fidelity and it doesn’t really oversell the clips/sessions. I grew up on fun Marine Layer vids so I channeled a bit of that energy into it.
Love it. Who had the craziest landing percentage average of the bunch?
Jake is the most underrated goofy foot I know. He really surfs insane and gets clips consistently.
Best wave of the trip?
I can’t say there was a best wave, but I just love how the edit feels like one of those memorable fun sessions with all your buddies out in the water. If this gets some people stoked to go surf and chase some different beach break peaks north or south of your local spot, than it’s mission accomplished. Let's get the band back together with next batch of boards and do it again!
